While the Sharing Economy is currently an infant, known mostly via AirBnB and JustPark, it's only the beginning. This P2P model is a new and alternative socio-economic system which at the heart of it is about sharing and collaborating across all aspects of economic and social life.
You might be wondering what kind of services there are besides AirBnB and JustPark. Well handy we have an info graphic to guide you in areas you should be saving and making money on.
Services are popping up in every aspect of life, from sharing your morning journey to London, to sleeping in a tent in Manchester.
The Sharing Economy also know as Collaborative Consumption is a trending business concept that gives consumers (you and I) the ability to buy or rent goods rather than buying them in a commercial sense.
Lets put that definition into practice with the concept of what we do, storage:
Scenario A - “Pre Sharing Economy boom”
Music lover, Kelly, loves her old vintage CD’s and Vinyl CD’s but has decided she wants to convert her shed into a music studio. She does not want to get rid of her CD’s so she stores them at a commercial rate at one of the big storage firms. She might begin by paying a £1 for storage but this will quickly change on to a much more expensive rate with hidden charges. For example, taking items out early etc
Scenario B - “Post Sharing Economy boom”
Music lover, Kelly, still loving her old vintage CD’s and Vinyl CD’s has decided she wants to convert her shed into a music studio. She still does not want to get rid of her CD’s so she signs up to Storemates and stores them with a neighbour, Eric. She pays him a much cheaper rate as she is paying for the space she needs rather than a container unit and has easy access to her CD’s as Eric lives 5 houses down the road.
The most important criteria for the sharing economy is that it allows people to make money on assets that are not being fully utilized. We allow people to make money on the spare space in their house. AirBnB allow people to make money on their spare accommodation and JustPark allow people to make money on their unused driveways.
There is a long term vision for the economy. AirBnB have shown that this model is stable, sustainable and something that benefits a great number of people. In addition, many people also don’t realise that they have used this model before... eBay sound familiar?
